Abstract
Moravian Library in Brno has long been an active player in the field of free and open source software development with old maps being one of the focal points of the development activities. Early on, a strategic decision has been made to use JPEG2000 as a digital image storage format. To enable online access to such images, IIPImage image server has been enhanced to support JPEG2000 and several image tile formats as well as advanced caching mechanism and an optional on-the-fly watermarking function. On the client side, we have been able to use OpenLayers based viewer. These technologies, combined with MapRank Search software, are the basis of the mapy.mzk.cz portal presenting the core of Moravian Library™s map collection, digitized with the help of EuropeanaTravel project. Placing an old map in the correct context requires not just displaying the map online but also placing it on a virtual globe or a world map. To this end, the Moravian Library codeveloped Georeferencer, a cloud based collaborative online georeferencing platform open to all users who like to play with online maps. Recently, georeferencer has been used in the StareMapy.cz project to successfuly georeference almost 9000 scanned old maps from 9 online map collections of Czech institutions in less then a month, Â with a successful coverage in public TV news! The maps are now being indexed via the OldMapsOnline map search engine to be easily geographically retrievable.
